Shihoko Fukumoto

1945 Born in Shimizu Prefecture

1968    B.F.A., Painting, Kyoto Municipal University of Fine Art

Shihoko Fukumoto started dyeing with indigo in the 1970s but it is the nature of the material that she uses, from linen, hemp, pineapple fibre or even loose weave mosquito netting where she really expresses her very individual designs. In 2006, using hand woven cloth sourced from old tunics, she picked apart this fabric, dyed and re-presented it, bringing it to life again as indigo tapestries for the 21st Century.  Her work can be seen in the American Crafts Museum, New York, USA, The Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, UK and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, UK
