Fumie Sasai is one of the most active female lacquer artists in Japan. She employs the technique called Nuritate that leaves the top layer unpolished. The solid and mild red surfaces represent feminine tenderness. “It is tempting to touch my urushi pieces resembling plants, animals and children. I would like to convey the fine texture of urushi through my works.” She is currently Assistant Professor at the Kyoto City University of Arts
