Kenichi Nagakura

1952 Born in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan

Mr Nagakura learned his bamboo techniques from his grandfather but he is mostly self-taught.  He is quite unconventional in his approach to bamboo and his work can appear deliberately rough using roots and lacquer mixed with powdered stone and clay.   By splitting lengths of bamboo into fine strips and densely weaving them, he constructs standing figures which are unexpected and surprising, revealing striking independence in the field of Japanese bamboo art.
